More than 9 teams and over 100 cyclists are expected at the starting line at 6:00 a.m. on Saturday April 11th, 2009 for the 81st Annual Holy Saturday Cross Country Cycling Classic. Some of Belize's best cyclists such as National Road Champion - Gregory Lovell, Belmopan Cycling Classic Champion - Giovanni Leslie, Roger Troyer, Darnell Barrow, Brandon Cattouse, Byron Pope, Shayne Vasquez, Jose Choto, Quinton Hamilton, Michael Lewis and Ernest Meighan will all be ready to give their all for team and country.
Several foreign riders from around the region are also expected to take part. However, last year's champion, 21-year old Ryan Baumann of Wisconsin, USA will not be able to defend his title since he currently rides for the Lance Armstrong-owned Trek Livestrong U-23 Continental Team. Baumann won the race last year with a record breaking time of 5 hours 40 minutes and 12 seconds.
The race will start in front of Leslie's Imports and will go all the way across the country to Santa Elena/San Ignacio where the riders will ride across the Hawksworth Bridge and make a quick circle around Columbus park in San Ignacio then head back along the same route to Belize City where it will eventually conclude in front of the Memorial Park on Marine Parade Boulevard.
